CHRISTIANITY IN ATSUMORI

I apologize for temporarily stopping posting blogs because of my need to focus on your academic performance after the MQT and the QT. I just felt the need to concentrate on the basics first. Besides, I noticed that week by week fewer bloggers had time to participate and share their insights, I completely understand why. Nevertheless, I am still hopeful that our "desire to respond to literature" will be rekindled this quarter.

For my first blog for the second quarter, I'd like to begin by asking WHAT IS CHRISTIAN IN THE BUDDHIST NOH PLAY, "ATSUMORI"?

Let me give one: Atsumori shows the value of loving one's enemies just like in one Biblical event wherein Jesus said that if someone slaps your cheek, give him/her also the other side or when someone throws stones at you, throw a bread back instead. So basically, Christians and Buddhists are one in believing that truly, it is in forgiveness and love that one attains peace and fulfillment, not through revenge or hatred.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE OTHER BIBLICAL/CHRUCH TEACHINGS THAT WE CAN RELATE TO "ATSUMORI"?

IMHO, Kumagai was likewise Christian in action, because even if he was a warrior, he was still sorry for killing Atsumori [I just learned he was around 15 years old when he died. O_O;] and even became a priest and prayed for his soul.

Forgiving ones enemy is hard enough. it is said to forgive 77 times in the bible right!?

In "Atsumori", Kumagai repented for killing Atsumori. Its like asking for forgiveness in Christianity.
For him to repent, he became a priest and as a sacrifice, he must spend his life full of prayer. In Christianity, we are to take challenges. In short, we are called to be SELFLESS.

One Christian teaching that we can find in "Atsumori" is that prayer and performing rituals are both important in attaining salvation.

In the play "Atusumori", it showed that Kumagai respected Atsumori as a fellow, but not really an opponent, though the two are from totally different clans. This shows respect and forgiveness of your enemy, and they are implied by Jesus when he said that "you should not forgive your brother 7 times, it should be 77 times."

atsumori also teaches the value of repentance and humility like of the ten commandments and beatitudes. it is hard for a person to admit a mistake and it's even more amazing to devote time for repenting.
